Hot water is one of those costs that hides in plain sight. It quietly makes up around a third — roughly 30% — of a typical home's electricity use, month after month, and almost nobody thinks about it until the cylinder dies on a Sunday and suddenly it's the only thing you're thinking about. It's not a glamorous part of a build, but few things shape the day-to-day comfort of a home like reliable, affordable hot water.
Heat pump hot water has been around long enough now to be a proven, mainstream choice. But down here the fair question people ask us is a bit more pointed: does it actually stack up in a cold climate, or is it one of those things that works beautifully in Auckland and falls over in an Alexandra winter?
The short answer is yes: it's well worth it for most homes here — but only if it's specified properly for our conditions. The nuance is the whole story, so let's go through it.

How it works, briefly
A heat pump hot water system runs on the same principle as the heat pump on your wall. Rather than generating heat the way an electric element does, it moves heat — pulling warmth out of the surrounding air and concentrating it to heat the water in your cylinder.
Because it's moving heat rather than making it, it's dramatically more efficient. For every unit of electricity it uses, you get somewhere between two and a half and four units of heat back. A standard electric cylinder, by comparison, gives you one. That efficiency ratio is the entire reason heat pump hot water costs so much less to run — and for a typical household, the saving over a conventional electric cylinder is substantial.
The two ways we usually do it
There are really two routes to heat-pump hot water, and which suits you comes down to whether you're heating your home hydronically.
The first is as part of a central heating system. If you're putting in — or already have — radiator or underfloor heating run by an air-to-water heat pump, that same heat pump can heat your domestic hot water too. By far the majority of our customers doing a heating project take this up, because it makes the most of the investment they're already making. The second is a standalone, all-in-one unit — the heat pump and cylinder integrated in a single package, like the Stiebel Eltron WWK. These can sit outside or in a garage, and they're the simplest option if you're not running hydronic central heating. The real question: does it cope with our cold?
This is the one that matters, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a brochure one.
Because the system draws its heat from the air, there's simply less to work with on a frosty night — so its efficiency does drop as the air gets colder. This is exactly where the integrated units earn their keep. The Stiebel Eltron WWK, for example, includes a backup element boost that kicks in automatically when the temperature drops below about -5°C, or when demand spikes — a houseful of guests arriving, say. It's a little less efficient in those moments, but it means you never run short of hot water, whatever the weather or the houseguests are doing.
The difference between a system that disappoints and one that delights still comes down largely to how it's specified and where it's installed. A unit sitting fully exposed in a spot that hits -5°C on a winter night will work harder than one given a bit of shelter.
So for homes in Dunedin, Invercargill, Queenstown, Cromwell and the colder inland spots especially, here's what we actually recommend: choose a unit properly rated to perform down to around -10°C or better, because not all of them are. Install it somewhere semi-sheltered — a garage, a utility room, a covered outdoor spot — rather than fully out in the weather. Look for a unit with intelligent heating logic that does its work during the warmer daytime hours rather than firing up cold in the small hours. And if you can schedule it to run on off-peak power, the running cost drops further again.
So is it worth it for your home?
For most connected homes here, the case is strong — and it gets stronger the longer you look at it.
The efficiency gain means a heat pump hot water system runs at a fraction of what a standard electric cylinder costs, year after year — over a service life that's typically in the 15-to-20-year range (the manufacturer's warranty period is shorter than that, and a unit that's worked hard won't last as long as one with an easy life, so we're careful not to treat two decades as a promise). And because your running cost is so much lower to begin with, you're far better insulated against future power-price rises — which have been heading in one direction for a while now. The lower your baseline, the less each increase stings.
There's a practical bonus too, especially in a new build: putting the heat pump outside (or in the garage) frees up the internal space a traditional indoor cylinder would have taken. Every square metre swallowed by equipment is a square metre you've paid to build and can't use for anything else — so getting the gear out of the house is worth more than it first appears.
It's worth being clear-eyed about it, though: the upfront cost is higher than simply dropping in another electric cylinder, and in a very cold, very exposed installation the gains are smaller than the headline numbers suggest. That's precisely why specifying it well matters so much, and why we'd rather talk through your specific situation than hand you a one-size-fits-all promise.
What about solar hot water?
Solar hot water was the efficient alternative a decade ago, but heat pump hot water has largely taken over as the go-to for most homes, for a few practical reasons.
It's cheaper and simpler to install — no roof-mounted collectors or separate heat-exchange circuit. It works regardless of which way your roof faces, so there's no south-facing-panel problem. It produces consistently rather than fading through a long cloudy spell. And crucially for us, it doesn't carry the freeze risk that solar thermal panels can in an Otago or Southland frost. There are still situations where solar makes sense — off-grid or very low-use properties especially — but for most homes on the grid, heat pump hot water is the better fit.
If your cylinder's getting old, plan ahead
Here's a piece of advice worth more than it looks: if your electric cylinder is fifteen years or older, replace it before it fails, not after.
When a cylinder lets go unexpectedly, you're suddenly making a rushed decision with no hot water in the house — and you usually end up accepting whatever the plumber can get hold of that day, which is rarely the system you'd have chosen with a clear head. Planning the replacement gives you the time to specify the right unit, in the right spot, for your conditions.
